10480 (2024). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Local Government: What evidence, if any, is there to prove that the Local Water Done Well model “works”?

Hon Simeon Brown: Councils have been very clear that they and their communities are best-placed to make decisions about how their water services are delivered sustainably and affordably in future. This is what Local Water Done Well is all about – the Government wants to enable councils and communities to determine what works best for them, while establishing clear expectations and bottom lines. The decision that Auckland Council has reached, with the Government’s support, is a good example of what we’re looking to achieve with Local Water Done Well. By changing the way water services are funded and delivered – and enabling councils to make decisions about the way they manage and deliver their water services – water-related cost pressures on councils, and in turn ratepayers, can be significantly reduced.
