10464 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: How will the switch to structured literacy impact Te Reo Maori – medium schools?

Hon Erica Stanford: Structured approaches to te reo matatini, including the development and use of learning and teaching resources such as pānui and tuhituhi sequences and decodable books, will strengthen explicit, systematic, and sequential teaching of pānui and tuhituhi. This will ensure students are learning the essential components of te reo Māori and have the explicit supports they require to succeed. I have been advised that a number of Māori medium and kura kaupapa Māori schools already take a structured literacy approach to te reo matatini.
