10400 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: Further to response 5417 (2024) what number and percentage of back-office roles are vacant as at 30 April 2024 broken down by roles?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that as at 30 April 2024, from a total of 1,496.50 FTE back-office roles, 323.6 (21.6%) FTE are unfilled. I am further advised that this figure includes 111 vacant back-office roles planned to be removed from establishment. Decisions regarding the removal of these roles had not yet been made as at 30 April 2024. I am further advised that the increase in the number of back-office roles since my response to WPQ 5417 (2024), is due to a new structure that Corrections transitioned to on 1 April 2024 which changed how frontline and back-office staff are categorised. As you may be aware, Corrections is one of New Zealand’s largest core agencies, employing nearly 10,000 staff, the majority of which are deployed in frontline roles across 17 Corrections-managed prisons and many more Community Corrections sites. This means that a number of staff that were considered to be frontline staff have been recategorised as their role was determined to be back-office in nature. I refer the member to the attached table, which provides the number of vacancies of back-office roles, broken down by role, as at 30 April 2024.
