10356 (2025). Shanan Halbert to the Minister of Police: Does the Minister stand by his comment 'We want New Zealanders to feel safe in their homes, communities and workplaces. The previous government was clearly taking us in the wrong direction' and if so, does he believe that the Rainbow Community feel safer under this government?

Hon Mark Mitchell: Yes, the previous Government oversaw a 51 per cent increase in violent crime. This is contrasted with the recent decline in violent crime - the first since 2018 - that has occurred since the coalition government took office. As the Member is well aware, members of the Rainbow community are victims of violent crime, so a reduction is encouraging but there is more work to do.
