10346 (2024). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: What plans, if any, does she have to ensure Structured Literacy is implemented in the school system, including Private and the proposed Charter schools?

Hon Erica Stanford: I recently announced with the Prime Minister $67 million in new funding in Budget 2024 for the delivery of structured literacy. The $67 million commitment as part of Budget 2024 includes: • Professional development on structured literacy for teachers. • Books and resources for schools and teachers. • Introducing phonics checks to assess student progression. • Additional support for students that need it. There will also be resources such as videos and facilitation guides available on Tāhūrangi, the Ministry of Education’s curriculum centre, which private/independent schools will be able to access. Decisions on PLD provision for charter schools are yet to be made.
