10259 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Will teachers be trained to understand which structured literacy form of reading instruction will best suit the individual child in their classrooms?

Hon Erica Stanford: Application of the structured literacy approach will be driven by what teachers notice their learners are doing well, and what they still need to learn. One outcome of professional learning and development (PLD) for structured literacy approaches is to build teachers’ capability to effectively use appropriate data to inform their teaching. This data includes both formative assessment and observation to guide teaching and accelerate the learner’s progress over time. Teachers will continue to be responsive to learner needs.
