Published date: 07 Apr 2026
10042 (2026). Camilla Belich to the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations: How much has been spent on external communications, public relations, advertising, or media monitoring by each department or entity for which the Minister is responsible in each financial year since 2021/22, broken down by department or entity and by spending category?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: I refer the Member to the Estimates document for Vote Te Tari Whakatau during its 2025/26 estimates hearing. Te Tari Whakatau’s response to question 43 provides information for each financial year since 2020/21. Please see below.
Question 43
How much is estimated will be spent on advertising, public relations campaigns or publications in the forthcoming financial year? How does this compare to the total cost of campaigns or publications completed in the past five financial years?
Te Tari Whakatau budget for 2025/26 is still being finalised. Te Tari Whakatau cannot estimate spend for 2025/26 for advertising, public relations campaigns, or publications.
Please refer to attachment 1 which sets out the cost of advertising and publicity for the previous five financial years. These costs include public notices relating to Treaty Settlements, public information campaigns (e.g. SILNA), materials for display and interior, and exterior signage.
For information post-June 2025, I refer to the Speaker’s Ruling 199/6; I do not consider it to be in the public interest to undertake an exercise to identify and collate the material requested, as it will require a significant diversion of resource. The Member may wish to consider asking a more specific question.
