9925 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: How will the government address potential gaps, if any, in surveillance and response capabilities for emerging strains of avian influenza, including H5N1 variants with pandemic potential?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that New Zealand is well equipped to detect emerging strains of avian influenza through Biosecurity New Zealand, the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) surveillance and international monitoring. I am further advised that the Ministry of Health is working with ESR to explore opportunities to further enhance surveillance for avian influenza and to consider avenues for improvement.
