9922 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: What steps are being taken to ensure that healthcare providers and frontline workers are adequately trained and equipped to respond effectively to any potential cases of avian influenza, including H5N1, in New Zealand, if any?
Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that healthcare services in New Zealand are well equipped and trained to respond effectively to novel respiratory pathogens, including H5N1. This includes identifying and treating any potential cases, as well as protecting staff against infection. It is worth noting that human-to-human transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza is extremely rare. I am further advised that in the event of an incursion of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), communications will go out to healthcare staff to aid them in identifying any potential cases.
