9732 (2026). Camilla Belich to the Minister for Social Development and Employment: What redundancy or restructuring costs, if any, have been incurred by any department or entity for which the Minister is responsible since 27 November 2023, listed by department or entity, the number of positions disestablished, and the total cost of redundancy payments?
Hon Louise Upston: I am advised by the Ministry of Social Development (the Ministry) that 391 people have been made redundant since 27 November 2023.
Included in this total are both voluntary redundancy and redundancy. The total cost of these redundancies was $25,215,611.4
I am further advised that the (then) Children and Young People’s Commission has disestablished one position since 27 November 2023. Total cost: $20,365.
The Independent Children’s Monitor has disestablished one position since 27 November 2023. Total cost: $54,558.10
The New Zealand Artificial Limb Service has disestablished one position since 27 November 2023. Total cost: $27,566.88.
The Social Workers Registration Board undertook an organisational review in 2025. Seven roles were disestablished. All affected staff were redeployed into new roles within the organisation. Total redundancy payments: $0. Total restructure cost: $75,812, comprising external consultancy fees associated with the organisational review process.
