9566 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister agree with Dr Sarah Aiono from Longwood Education when she said that structured literacy is not necessarily a silver bullet and this is one aspect of a complex way of teaching and we need our teachers to have the support to understand all the strategies to support reading not just one aspect of it; if not, why not?
Hon Erica Stanford: I agree that there is no silver bullet. However, the evidence is clear that structured literacy works for the overwhelming majority students when teaching them to read and write. The Ministry of Education will provide advice to teachers to assist students to meet their learning milestones and achievements and identify those who may need more intensive teaching and support.
