9545 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: What further progress for human rights in New Zealand, if any, were identified by the Minister at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: At New Zealand’s fourth Universal Periodic Review examination, I spoke about progress that had been made since New Zealand’s last review and identified a number of continuing human rights challenges for New Zealand across the following areas:
- Refugees and asylum seekers
- Employment rights
- Migrants
- Children in state care
- Education
- The criminal justice system
- Family and sexual violence, and
- Indigenous rights.
I also identified priority areas for this Government and responded to advanced questions received from Member States. I restated the Government’s continuing commitment to human rights at a national and international level.
The full copies of my speeches will be available on the United Nations website in due course.
