9525 (2024). Chlöe Swarbrick to the Minister for Resources: What is the proportion of coal mined in New Zealand being used in New Zealand, versus being sent offshore?
Hon Shane Jones: The amount of coal mined in New Zealand, and the amount exported versus being kept in country, varies from year to year. MBIE's most recent coal statistics show that New Zealand’s total coal production in 2023 was 2,600,084t. Of this amount: • 1,224,197t (47.1%) was exported • 1,375,887t (52.9%) stayed within New Zealand.
