9509 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Police: Have the police corresponded with stakeholders in respect of their views on possible firearms law reform; if so what is the nature of that correspondence, when was it sent, and who was it sent to?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that New Zealand Police last corresponded with stakeholders on possible law reform in 2022 and 2023. As noted in the Briefing to the Incoming Minister, these related to the Regulations to support the implementation of the Registry, the Royal Commission of Inquiry recommendation on the mandatory reporting of firearm injuries, and a Review of Arms Act fees. Since 19 January 2024, policy responsibility for Arms Act 1983 and Arms Regulations 1992 was transferred to Ministry of Justice in keeping with the Government’s Coalition Agreement. Police’s on-going responsibility is to implement and enforce the law.
