9323 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: Which human rights recommendations if any, did the Minister receive from UN Member States at the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: New Zealand received 259 recommendations at New Zealand’s fourth Universal Periodic Review examination on the 29 April 2024 in Geneva Switzerland. The 259 recommendations made by Member States for the New Zealand Government’s consideration covered a range of topics, including:
- Addressing social and economic inequalities between Māori and other New Zealanders;
- Eliminating violence against women and children;
- Enhancing inclusive education for children with disabilities;
- Introducing modern slavery legislation;
- Increasing the minimum age of criminal responsibility;
- Taking further action to respond to climate change, including with respect to climate migrants and climate financing; and
- Ratifying international instruments such as the Migrant Workers Convention and the Convention on Enforced Disappearances.
The full list of human rights recommendations made by United Nations (UN) Member states will be made available on the UN website in the coming week.
