9256 (2025). Lan Pham to the Minister of Local Government: How many, if any, breaches of the Maximum Acceptable Value of nitrate in drinking water were found in 2024?

Hon Simon Watts: The Water Services Authority – Taumata Arowai was notified, by accredited water testing laboratories, of 16 exceedances of the MAV for Nitrate in drinking water supplies in 2024. When notifications of Nitrate exceedances are received from registered drinking water supplies, the Authority requires the supplier to issue a ‘do not drink’ notice to consumers. The Authority also contacts the relevant regional council, as the consenting authority for water extraction, so it can inform any other users or consumers taking water from the source, such as domestic households, of the nitrate exceedance.
