9092 (2026). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: What options are available to overseas New Zealanders currently in Iran or neighbouring countries who are unable to register on Safe Travel due to reasons such as limited/no access to internet and/or electronic devices?
Rt Hon Winston Peters: New Zealand’s long-standing advice to New Zealanders has been not to travel to Iran, and that if they are in Iran, they should leave when it is safe to do so. If they cannot leave safely, they should shelter in a safe place. Iran's airspace is closed and commercial flights are suspended, although land borders remain open. Travellers should be aware of the significant safety risks associated with road movements and overland travel. Border crossings could close without notice.
The internet and communication blackout across Iran has made keeping in touch with New Zealanders in Iran difficult. Some New Zealanders in Iran with limited connectivity have been able to call the Ministry’s 24/7 Consular helpline, and our consular staff have been completing SafeTravel registrations for them, with their consent. Alternatively, family members can call on behalf of their loved one to register them.
We advise New Zealanders with family and friends in Iran to keep trying to contact them as lines become clear.
If New Zealanders have concerns for the safety of their family in Iran they should call the Consular Emergency number +64 99 202020.
