8654 (2025). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Has there been an update on the teacher shortage forecast, if so, what is it?

Hon Erica Stanford: I refer the Member to the report, 2024 Teacher Demand and Supply Planning Projection, publicly available on the Education Counts website: https://www.educationcounts.govt.nz/publications/series/a-summary-of-the-teacher-demand-and-supply-planning-tool/teacher-demand-and-supply-planning-projection-2024-results The medium supply scenario published in this report forecasts a national shortage of: • 750 primary teachers in 2025, shifting to a surplus of 230 in 2027 • 500 secondary teachers in 2025, reducing to a shortage of 300 in 2027.
