8566 (2026). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: How many public EV charge points does the Ministry of Transport project will exist by January 2030 under current funding settings, and does he consider this sufficient to meet the 10,000 charge point target?

Hon Chris Bishop: I am advised by the Ministry of Transport that under the current funding settings, it is expected that the concessionary loan programme will make a significant contribution to accelerating the installation of EV charge points. It is important to note that the concessionary loan scheme is only one mechanism for building our public EV charging network. The Ministry of Transport expects the rate of installation to accelerate as the EV fleet and the demand for public chargers grows. The Ministry also expects that as demand for EV charging infrastructure grows, the market will step up to meet that demand.
