8564 (2025). Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan to the Minister for Disability Issues: What work, if any, has the Minister progressed on the recommendations from Royal Commission Inquiry into Abuse in Care?

Hon Louise Upston: I am advised that The Ministry of Disabled People - Whaikaha is working with an advisory group to create a Ministry-hosted website with information about, and resources to assist with, supported decision-making. Increasing supported decision-making capacity aligns with recommendation 114 of the final report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care. The website will include practical examples of how to assist disabled people and others who require support (such as people with dementia or reduced capacity due to illness) to make their own decisions in key areas of their lives, including about their health and wellbeing, housing, education pathways and employment, and in residential care. The Ministry of Disabled People is working together with other government agencies on ensuring that Government’s response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care is coordinated and mechanisms are in place across the care system to keep disabled people safe from abuse and neglect. In my capacity as Minister for Disability Issues, I am advised that the Ministry of Social Development’s Disability Support Services are contributing to a wide range of initiatives underway as part of the cross-Government response on the recommendations from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care.
