8142 (2025). Hon Barbara Edmonds to the Associate Minister of Finance: What is the anticipated effect of the Overseas Investment Act reform on income inequality and regional economic disparities, if any?
Hon David Seymour:
While overseas investment screening is intensive by default, only a small percent of applications are declined. The core reforms will allow the regulator to consent low risk applications made by reputable investors within 15 days. This reduction in compliance costs for investors will support economic growth by encouraging greater access to capital, which facilitates productivity growth and higher paying jobs.
Any impacts on income inequality or regional economic disparities will depend on the pattern of investment into New Zealand over the coming decades.
