7674 (2026). Kahurangi Carter to the Minister for Children: What training, if any, is provided to the security guards who look after children in interim accommodation as noted on page 22 of the Aroturuki Tamariki Independent Children’s Monitor Experience in Care Aotearoa Report 2024/2025?
Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that when children or young people need to temporarily stay in a motel, they are usually supported by a partnered service, less frequently by an Oranga Tamariki Social Worker or Resource Worker, or in rare cases, by family members.
I am further advised that while security guards are occasionally used to provide an extra level of security and assurance, they should never be solely responsible for the care of children or young people staying in motels.
