7672 (2026). Kahurangi Carter to the Minister for Children: What evidence, if any, does the Minister have to substantiate her claim that the most common length of stay in a motel is one night, and most children and young people stay fewer than three nights, as stated in the House on Thursday, March 5th, 2026?
Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised that Oranga Tamariki undertook analysis of motel stay data over the period January 2022 to May 2025. This is the most recent analysis of motel data Oranga Tamariki has completed and covers most of the period addressed by the Independent Children’s Monitor report.
I am further advised that this analysis found that the most common length of stay was one night, and that most children and young people stayed three or fewer nights in a motel.
