7644 (2026). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What operational changes, if any, are being considered to increase remand prisoners’ access to services and programmes during the month of January 2026?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that operational changes to support increased access to services and programmes for remand prisoners during January 2026 focused on maintaining delivery where staffing capacity permitted, while recruitment activities were underway to strengthen programme delivery capability for the remainder of the year.
During January 2026, five participants completed the Head Start programme, and two starts for Short Rehabilitation Programme – Medium Intensity (SRP M).
I am further advised that a significant recruitment effort occurred to improve access going forward. This resulted in the appointment of one psychologist and four programme facilitators, all of whom commenced in March 2026. While the majority of these new staff members are currently completing induction and training requirements, only one site with newly appointed staff has commenced limited programme delivery.
These operational changes, maintaining programme delivery in January where possible, alongside the recruitment and onboarding of additional staff are expected to enhance access to services and programmes for remand prisoners over the coming months.
