7504 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Why was the decision to scrap Fishing Related Mortality Limits for New Zealand Sea Lions not included as an option in Fisheries New Zealaand's consultation document on the Southern Squid Trawl Fishery (SQU 6T) Operational Plan and sea lion protection?
Hon Shane Jones: I am advised that the consultation document proposed options to maintain the approach of setting a Fishing Related Mortality Limit (FRML) for the fishery, following the expiration of the FRML at the end of the 2022-23 Fishing Year. Following consultation, further analysis presented in the final advice from Fisheries New Zealand considered that the setting of a FRML was no longer a necessary management measure to manage the effect of the fishery on sea lions.
