7495 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Does he accept advice from the Department of Conservation that a Fishing Related Mortality Limit (FRML) of 22 for sea lions is “the only option that agrees with the bycatch reduction goal of the Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy (ANZBS)”; did he consider this advice in his decision to remove the FRML all together?
Hon Shane Jones: I considered the advice from the Department of Conservation which also noted that the Department acknowledges that the FRML is not the most effective tool for managing fishing impacts on New Zealand sea lions at the Auckland Islands.
