Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: Further to 4683 (2025), is information about Māori, Pacific and disabled children and young people in the care or custody of Oranga Tamariki collected in different ways to information about children and young people of refugee and migrant backgrounds, and if so, why?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that their case management system CYRAS enables staff to record information about ethnicity, Iwi affiliation and disability as structured data, although details still need to be recorded as descriptive information in case notes. Structured data can be more easily and quickly collated and reported on. I am further advised that whether someone has either a migrant or refugee background can only be recorded as narrative text in individual case files in CYRAS. I am also advised that information about whether someone has a migrant or refugee background would only be recorded insofar as it is relevant to the reason Oranga Tamariki are involved.
