7256 (2024). Tamatha Paul to the Minister for Children: Further to the reply to Written Question 179 (2024), will the primary focus of the Government’s Young Offender Military Academies be the “military style component”, rehabilitation and/or counselling, or something else?

Hon Karen Chhour: The focus is on making a difference to the lives of the teenagers who will be part of the Military-style Academies to enable them to thrive and positively contribute to their whānau and community. As per my announcement on 5 March 2024, to achieve this the Academies will include a military-style component as well as a rehabilitative and trauma-informed care approach to help these young people turn their lives around and reduce their risk of reoffending.
