7074 (2024). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: How many state houses were there at 31 December 2023 and how does that number compare to the number of state houses on 31 December 2008 and 31 December 2017?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that as at 31 December 2023, it managed 67,768 state homes. The figure as at 31 December 2017 was 61,351 and 67,267 as at 31 December 2008.
As at 31 December 2023, Kāinga Ora owned or leased a total of 72,750 homes. The further 4,982 homes were as follows:
• 2,445 transitional homes that Kāinga Ora leases to third parties to provide short-term accommodation for longer durations (e.g. six months)
• 1,511 Community Group Housing homes that are leased to groups who support people in the community
• 971 properties owned by Kāinga Ora and leased to CHPs
• 55 Te Matawai, Auckland homes recorded as at 31 December 2023 as non-public housing
