7071 (2024). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: Is Kāinga Ora assessing any state homes for potential sale and if so, how many homes are currently under consideration for potential sale?

Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora advises me that it does reactively sell individual houses under certain circumstances. When a house becomes vacant a scoping exercise is carried out with regard to maintenance before a new tenant takes up residency. Selling the property may be considered if the house is old and uneconomic to refurbish, or no longer meets the needs of our tenants, or is in an area where there is no demand and this has been the case for some time. Kāinga Ora also has a programme for tenant home ownership where certain criteria are met. The number of homes currently being assessed for sale is not recorded or reported centrally. As was publicly reported in February 2024, Treasury advice indicated that Kāinga Ora was forecasting the sale of 10,000 homes over the next four years. Kāinga Ora is currently subject to an independent review into its financial situation, procurement, and asset management. It is critical that Kāinga Ora is focused on efficiently building social houses for people in need while also delivering value for taxpayers’ money, and this review will provide recommendations to ensure that these objectives are being met.
