7041 (2024). Chlöe Swarbrick to the Minister of Climate Change: What role, if any, does the Minister believe new coal mining activity should play in Aotearoa NZ's climate policy?

Hon Simon Watts: I believe fossil fuels like coal play a role in our energy transition, particualrly in dry years where renewable energy is less abundant. The government has committed to doubling New Zealand's renewable energy to increase the supply of renewable energy and reduce reliance on other fuels.
