6940 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Associate Minister of Health: If a mother in a maternity ward is attended by a Lead Maternity Carer (not employed by Te Whatu Ora) is the bed she occupies considered staffed?
Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that yes, the bed she occupies is considered staffed. Health New Zealand is required to have sufficient staff to manage care in all beds in a maternity ward, with Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs) mostly providing care in the labour and birthing areas.
