6667 (2026). Arena Williams to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs: What changes, if any, is the Minister considering for the Retail Payment System (Ban on Merchant Surcharges) Amendment Bill to help affordability for small businesses?

Hon Scott Simpson: I am not currently considering any changes. However, I note that the decision to ban surcharges, alongside the Commerce Commission’s move to reduce interchange fees, has already delivered benefits for small businesses and will continue to do so over time. Businesses that have concerns about the fees they are paying may also wish to raise these with their provider and consider whether alternative options are available.
