6510 (2025). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Associate Minister of Education: Does the Ministry of Education track food waste from the school lunch programme per school?

Hon David Seymour: Information on surplus meals is published daily on the school lunch collective website https://www.schoollunchcollective.co.nz/our-impact I note the last government did not start tracking surplus until 2023, and in Term 4, 2023, only 407 of the approximately 1000 schools receiving the programme self-reported that approximately 9 per cent of lunches were surplus. This equates to approximately $30 million per annum of surplus scaled across the whole programme. Waste was not measured.
