6478 (2024). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Local Government: What effect, if any, have Māori wards had on the representation of Māori in local government?
Hon Simeon Brown: Local Government New Zealand survey data indicates that Māori representation in local government has grown in the last 19 years. This shouldn’t be solely correlated to more Māori wards. I have always encourage as much democratic participation as possible and hope that we will continue to see an upswing in participation from all demographics at the next local body election.
