Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: How, if at all, did the over 11,000 additional state homes delivered through funding provided in Budgets 2018, 2020 and 2023 help to reduce the number of people on the Housing Register and alleviate overcrowding in Kāinga Ora homes and what further reductions in the Housing Register and overcrowding in Kāinga Ora homes can be expected in 2025/26 and 2026/27 based on the number of social homes funded through Budgets 2024 and 2025?

Hon Chris Bishop: I am advised that the number of people on the housing register nationally rose from 6,455 in January 2018 to 25,388 in December 2023 (with a peak of 27,234 in April 2022). The Government has continued to invest in social housing with a focus on areas of the greatest need. In terms of the Housing Register, as at November 2025 the number of people has reduced to 19,505.
