6043 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What effect, if any, has Kāinga Ora’s cancellation of 212 building projects that would have delivered 3479 state homes had on the government’s ability to address homelessness in New Zealand?
Hon Chris Bishop: None of those 212 building projects were funded. Between November 2023 and November 2025, there were 7,046 net social houses added in the country by Community Housing Providers and Kāinga Ora. Through Budgets 2024 and 2025, we are already delivering more than 2,000 additional homes, including more one-bedroom and accessible homes where they are needed most.
The Kāinga Ora Turnaround programme has allowed the agency to get its books back in order and improve performance – delivering lower build costs, a strong renewals programme, less rental debt, and higher tenancy satisfaction.
This Government is still delivering social housing places that New Zealanders need and these will improve the Government’s ability to address homelessness in New Zealand.
