5982 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: Further to his reply to Question 1499 (2026), how did Kāinga Ora dispose of the waste from the 626 homes it demolished or deconstructed between October 2024 and December 2025?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora advises that information on demolition waste disposal is not held in a single centralised system, and consolidated data for the 626 demolitions cannot be produced without manually reviewing each project, which is not feasible within the available timeframe.
Kainga Ora aims to minimise the amount of construction waste that ends up in landfill as much as possible. Wherever it is practical and cost effective, priority is given to relocating houses over demolition. When demolition is necessary, Kainga Ora reuses and recycles materials where it can, with hardfill typically crushed for reuse, metals recycled, green waste composted, and only nonrecoverable materials sent to commercial waste facilities.
