5853 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Justice: Why did he not include banning gang insignia on social media as part of the Gangs Legislation Amendment Bill as specified in the 2023 election campaign?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: I considered options to prohibit the display of insignia on social media. Overall, I decided the prohibition should only be extended to insignia displayed physically in public. This is because insignia encountered online does not risk creating the same level of public fear and intimidation as those encountered physically in public, and the practical difficulties of enforcing a ban on social media platforms.
