5814 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What challenges, if any, are there when delivering programmes in women’s prisons?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that there are various challenges in delivering programmes to people in women’s prisons, and these challenges are similar to those faced in delivering programmes to men’s prisons.
At all times, prison staff must balance the timely delivery of programmes alongside the need to maintain the safety and security requirements of the prison.
In addition to staffing challenges, factors include the need to separate people who are remand-accused from people who are remand-convicted and sentenced, an individual’s identified risks and participants’ willingness to engage.
