5780 (2025). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister of Justice: What work, if any, has been done to understand the impacts of foreign interference from Five Eyes countries to inform the drafting of the Crimes (Countering Foreign Interference) Amendment Bill?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: The work that informed the drafting of the Crimes (Countering Foreign Interference) Amendment Bill focused on behaviours and activities of concern, not the country of origin. The policy development process was country agnostic to ensure that the proposed legislation would be equally applicable to actors regardless of the foreign power they are acting on behalf of.
