5758 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: What considerations, if any, were given to tikanga when producing maths resources in te reo Māori?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised that resources were developed specifically to support the work of kaiako delivering in and through te reo Māori. Poutama Pāngarau is a structured approach to pāngarau that promotes mātauranga by incorporating Māori cultural perspectives, values, and knowledge within mathematical concepts. It is informed by the pāngarau wāhanga ako (learning areas). It specifies scope, sequence, and pace that is designed to support the specific linguistic and cultural contexts of te reo Māori in produced resources. The content and design of the Poutama Pāngarau programme and accompanying resources considers authentic ideas that allow for the incorporation of authentic examples, culturally resonant teaching methods, and educational practices that align with learners' social and cultural backgrounds.
