5754 (2024). Ricardo Menéndez March to the Minister of Immigration: Further to the Minister’s answer to Oral Question no. 4 on 21 March 2024 that “It is unfortunately not a visa issue; it is a border issue, and as I've said a number of times, if that changes, we will reconsider our position”, has the Minister received advice on the border issue, and if so, what was the title and date of that advice?
Hon Erica Stanford: Since becoming Minister I have asked for frequent updates on the border situation both in relation to people that we have issued visas to and their ability to cross the border between Gaza and Egypt as well as other countries and their efforts to get people out of Gaza. Due to the constantly evolving situation in Gaza much of the advice I receive is via verbal updates. I am also updated via my weekly report. There are also occasions where the border situation is mentioned as part of a broader update. MBIE officials work closely with MFAT on the provision of this advice. I note that most of the information I have received in relation to other countries' responses is sensitive and subject to an obligation of confidence. I also note that advice on the situation at the Gaza border is led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
