5707 (2025). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: How many roles at Police, if any, monitor firearms related content online, broken down by title and assigned business unit?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that there are no specific roles at Police that monitor firearms related content online. However, I have been advised that groups within Police such as the Intelligence team and the Partnership and Communities Directorate have the ability to monitor firearms related content online. • Intelligence Team: Five staff members perform a variety of regulatory intelligence functions including supporting continuous eligibility scanning of licence holders (which can include open-source social media content). This team also provides periodically the Authority’s leadership team with sentiment analysis on firearms issues from open-source online media content. • Partnerships and Communities Directorate – which includes the Authority’s Communications Team – also views some related online content but at this time there are no staff dedicated to monitoring online firearms content. Please note, to provide the requested information for the wider Police organisation would require considerable effort to assemble. The time and associated cost in obtaining this information are not, in my view, justifiable.
