5701 (2026). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: How, if at all, were Māori education leaders in English-medium school settings involved in shaping the direction of the Ministry of Education's curriculum refresh process?

Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised by the Ministry of Education that, during the development of the refreshed curriculum, the following groups were involved: • Māori Education Ministerial Advisory Group • Curriculum contributing groups • Review Groups (including educators and organisations from both Kaupapa Māori Education and Māori medium education). These groups provided a range of independent advice and guidance on matters, including on content relating to Māori education in both English medium and Māori medium education settings. When establishing the contributing groups and review groups, the Ministry considered expertise in the use of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori, and in working with akōnga Māori as part of the selection criteria. These groups include sector representatives that made up the collective expertise required as per the wider selection criteria. Public consultation also provides the sector and wider public with the opportunity to provide feedback.
