5535 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Does he have any evidence or data that onboard cameras have been effective primarily for educational purposes, and not for ensuring compliance and accountability in the industry?

Hon Shane Jones: I am advised that Fisheries New Zealand provides feedback and education based on what is seen during the routine review of footage through a variety of channels, including: direct engagement with fishers, the protected species liaison programme, industry organisations, and enabling fishers to view footage collected from their own vessels. If suspected breaches of regulation are observed then the incident will be referred to Fisheries New Zealand’s compliance team for further investigation.
