5534 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology: What process, if any, was followed for the appointment of Elena Trout to Chair of Callaghan Innovation?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: The Callaghan Innovation Chair was recruited from within the Board. The role of Chair was not publicly advertised due to the upcoming disestablishment of Callaghan Innovation and there were capable people on the Board who could take on the role. It was vital that the Chair appointment be someone who had the institutional knowledge and depth of understanding of the context of which the organisation is operating in. Due to appointing a Chair from within Board membership, no interviews were undertaken, and a Panel was not required. I considered each member of the Board and subsequently progressed the appointment of Ms Trout as Chair of Callaghan Innovation. The appointment was considered by APH and confirmed at Cabinet.
