5517 (2026). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: What proportion of patients with renal failure in Whakatāne, if any, undergo peritoneal dialysis because there is not capacity for haemodialysis?
Hon Simeon Brown: I am advised that 11 percent of renal failure patients in Whakatāne are undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Please note that some patients might be better served with haemodialysis from a clinical perspective but the patient would prefer to stay on a sub-optimal therapy in order to stay at home. This data isn't measured or captured by any formal means.
