5507 (2025). Hon Rachel Brooking to the Minister for the Environment: Will she prioritize developing a nationwide awareness campaign on the dangers of improper battery disposal, and if not, why not?

Hon Penny Simmonds: The Waste Minimisation Act 2008 (WMA) offers regulatory options for product stewardship to reduce waste, manage environmental harm from waste products, and achieve social and economic benefits through resource efficiency. I am advised the Ministry for the Environment is discussing with stakeholders the issues associated with batteries, and what further activities could be undertaken through product stewardship schemes to support the safe management of batteries at end of life. The Ministry is also investigating whether there are funding opportunities to support interim work on safe battery management.
