Lan Pham to the Minister of Local Government: When writing the Water Services (Wastewater Environmental Performance Standards) Regulations 2025, did the international regulatory practice that was reviewed apply to receiving waterbodies that are comparable to waterbodies in New Zealand?

Hon Simon Watts: Yes. The comparability of receiving water bodies assisted, by way of example, the classification of receiving environments, the necessary and appropriate treatment limits for each of those receiving environments, and the deployment of risk management frameworks as important design features of the regulations.
